Electronic Sound

Issue 118 Most people know Delia Derbyshire best for her alchemical arrangement of the ‘Doctor Who’ theme, turning Ron Grainer’s simple melody into something unearthly and futuristic. But for all that she achieved as a member of the Radiophonic Workshop during the 1960s, there’s a sense that Derbyshire found true freedom of expression with the trailblazing White Noise project, alongside her Radiophonic colleague Brian Hodgson and American musician David Vorhaus. The recent reissue of ‘An Electric Storm’, White Noise’s wilfully experimental and delectably strange debut album, once again shines a light on this electronic masterpiece. Writer David Stubbs interviewed both Hodgson and Vorhaus for our cover feature, the pair reflecting on the late 60s counterculture in which the group materialised. How the trio came together is a highly entertaining story, with lots of surprising twists and turns. Lots of sex and drugs as well.
